The Real Cost of Waiting to Buy Life Insurance

Life insurance is priced on the chance you will claim during the term. Every birthday makes that chance slightly higher, so quotes usually rise with age.

Two costs of delay

The first is price. At an assumed 8% rise per year, a 40 a month quote would become about 58.77 after five years, adding roughly 4,500 across a 20-year term. The second is exposure: those five years have no cover at all.

Health is the wildcard

A new diagnosis, weight change or tobacco use can shift you to a higher rate class, or lead to a decline. That risk does not appear in an age-only estimate.

What to do

Get two or three quotes, choose a term that matches your longest obligation, and check that the application is accurate. Honest answers protect a later claim.
