A stay-at-home parent earns no salary, yet the work does not vanish if they die. Someone must be paid or take time off to cover childcare, cooking, cleaning and driving.

Price the work

Add weekly hours for each task and multiply by a local hourly rate. For example, 49 hours at 18 an hour is 45,864 a year.

Choose the years

Multiply the yearly cost by the years until your youngest child is independent. Then consider extra for funeral costs and time off for the surviving parent.

Run the numbers in the Stay-at-Home Parent Value Calculator.

Frequently asked questions
